Mosquito Species List
Mosquito taxonomy is contentious, which has resulted in numerous nomenclatures in simultaneous use. To help facilitate communication, we have provided a species list, based on those available publicly through resources such as the Mosquito Taxonomic Inventory (https://mosquito-taxonomic-inventory.myspecies.info/).

The number of described species per tribe (for the Culicinae) and for subfamily Anophelinae are shown. The Aedini is the most specious tribe of mosquitoes.

We used the species list to examine when mosquito species were described. There was a notable recent spike in species descriptions.

Taxonomy of the Aedini is particularly contentious. Our recent literature review highlights the presence of three clades in the tribe: the genus Psorophora, and Clades A and B. Both clades contain Aedes species, and members of other genera.
There are more than 3,600 species of mosquitoes, found across two subfamilies (Anophelinae and Culicinae). Among these, the Culicinae is far more specious.
