Invasive mosquito species pose a significant risk to public and wildlife health in Alberta. In 2018 an invasive mosquito species, the northern house mosquito (Culex pipiens), was discovered in Alberta and has since spread to four major municipalities including Calgary. The northern house mosquito is the most widespread mosquito species globally. Its success is due its ability to exploit human-altered environments such as using houses and other buildings to survive our cold winters. Globally, the northern house mosquito is considered among the most important carriers of West Nile virus.
If you are interested in contributing to the knowledge of the northern house mosquito in Calgary and where mosquitoes go for the winter, please mail us mosquitoes you find indoors this winter! This data will help us understand the ecology and distribution of the northern house mosquito in Alberta and will guide future preventative measures.

Place your mosquito in a ziplock bag and mail it in a regular envelop. Please include with the mosquito the date of collection, location details including an address and general description (ex: home basement). Squished mosquitoes are ok! If you would like to know which species you found, provide us with an email address and we will send you an update!
Your contact information and location will not be shared, and we will only contact you regarding your submitted mosquito if requested.
